The Department of Emergency Medicine is proud to host an Academic Associates Program which allows motivated, undergraduate students to participate in the collection of prospective data while observing the state-of-the-art medical care provided to our patients 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.
Typically, an Academic Associate spends between 8 and 12 hours a week volunteering in the Emergency Department. During that time they have access to our electronic medical records system in order to identify patients that meet criteria for our clinical studies. Academic Associates are also involved in the collection of real-time data both from patient's records and also from physicians, residents and the patients themselves.
Since the Spring of 2009, approximately 10 - 12 undergraduates have participated every semester in the program and have been able to observe first-hand how medicine is practiced. Participants have also requested and received letters of recommendation to further assist them in the post-graduate goals related to medicine.
Currently we have undergraduate students from the following schools participating:
- William Paterson University
- Montclair State University
- Drew University
