St. Joseph's Welcomes Special Nurses Week Guest Speaker

CrossPATERSON, NJ [May 15, 2012] – The Nursing Team at St. Joseph's Healthcare System led by Maria Brennan, MSN, RN, CPHQ, Chief Nursing Officer, SJHS, and Vice President, Patient Care Services, St. Joseph's Regional Medical Center (left), welcomed Virginia R. Beeson, RN, BSN, MSN, NEA-BC, retired United States Navy Nurse Corps Captain and nurse executive, educator, and consultant, as the 2012 Nurses Week celebration special guest speaker.

Ms. Beeson served as Director of Navy Medicine's Leadership Development Program, Deputy Director of the Navy Nurse Corps, and Chief Nurse Executive at The National Naval Medical Center in Bethesda, MD, before retiring from the Navy in June 2003. Her presentation, "Nurses Caring for Nurses: Changing the Culture of Nursing" focused on building leadership capacity and changing/transforming organizational culture.

Ms. Beeson provided mirror presentations to the nursing staff at the St. Joseph's Regional Medical Center - an American Nurses Credentialing Center recognized Magnet for Nursing Excellence organization since 1999 - in Paterson and to the nursing staff at St. Joseph's Wayne Hospital, a division of St. Joseph's Regional Medical Center in Wayne, NJ.

Founded by the Sisters of Charity of Saint Elizabeth in 1867, St. Joseph's Hospital, now St. Joseph's Healthcare System, has grown in size and scope of service to encompass St. Joseph's Regional Medical Center, an academic tertiary medical center and state-designated trauma center including acute care comprehensive St. Joseph's Children's Hospital, a state-designated children's hospital in Paterson, NJ; St. Joseph's Wayne Hospital, an acute care community hospital and division of St. Joseph's Regional Medical Center in Wayne, NJ; and St. Vincent's Nursing Home, a long-term skilled nursing home in Cedar Grove, NJ. Model of Care Stresses Personalized Caring and Collaboration

HlthQtrly NursingModelOfCareAtSJHSThe elderly patient was in a quandary, and he turned to his nurse for help.

"His family strongly desired to help care for him while he was in the hospital, to take over some of his basic care like his bed bath," says Maria Brennan, MSN, RN, CPHQ, Chief Nursing Officer, St. Joseph's Healthcare System (SJHS) and Vice President, Patient Care Services, St. Joseph's Regional Medical Center (SJRMC). But the patient wanted the nursing staff to do it instead.

"It was a matter of his dignity," Brennan says. "He was embarrassed in front of his family. He also wanted to be fresh when they arrived, rather than have them help him get ready."

 

The nurse explained the situation to the family, and, with discussion, they understood. It was a family issue averted and another success for relationship-based care, an innovative care delivery model at St. Joseph's that enhances the current high standard of care by emphasizing the importance of caring and collaboration to address the unique needs of each patient.
