WAYNE, NJ [February 14, 2012] – "The American Academy of Sleep Medicine (AASM) congratulates The Sleep Center at St. Joseph's Wayne Hospital on fulfilling the high standards required for accreditation as a sleep disorders center," said Dr. Nancy Collop, President, AASM.

This national level accreditation assures the community that The Sleep Center at St. Joseph's Wayne Hospital in Wayne, New Jersey, a division of St. Joseph's Regional Medical Center, "is a significant resource to the local medical community and will provide academic and scientific value in addition to the highest quality care for patients suffering from sleep disorders," she added.

Under the medical direction of Nidal Matalkah, MD, and pediatric sleep specialist Roberto Nachajon, MD, The Sleep Center at St. Joseph's Wayne Hospital is dedicated to the study and cure of sleep disorders. The comfortable 4-bed center combines the latest technology with a warm, hotel-like atmosphere.

"We are proud to be recognized for the superior advanced services of such a unique sleep center," noted Dr. Matalkah. "The Sleep Center at St. Joseph's Wayne Hospital is one of the few centers of its type in Northern New Jersey -- and the only center in Passaic County -- to offer the added value of providing sleep studies to children interpreted by two Board-certified Pediatric Sleep Specialists, Roberto Nachajon, MD, and Neal Nakra, MD."

To receive the five-year national accreditation, a sleep center must meet or exceed all standards of professional health care as designated by the American Academy of Sleep Medicine. The rigorous accreditation process involves a detailed inspection of a center's facility and staff, including an evaluation of testing procedures, patient contacts, and physician training. Additionally, the facility's goals must be clearly stated and include plans for positively affecting the quality of medical care in the community it serves. The AASM – the national accrediting body for sleep disorders centers and laboratories, is dedicated to setting standards and promoting excellence in sleep medicine, health care, education and research. The AASM currently accredits more than 2,200 sleep medicine centers and laboratories across the county.
