WAYNE, NJ [NOVEMBER 19, 2012] – The St. Joseph's Wayne Hospital (SJWH) Foundation proudly recognizes Frank L. Kardos, MD (resident of Fair Lawn), a member of the SJWH Medical Staff, with the 2012 Distinguished Physician Award at the Foundation's Annual Charity Ball. The annual gala was held on Saturday, November 17th at The Rockleigh.
"Congratulations to Dr. Frank Kardos, the well-deserving recipient of the 2012 Distinguished Physician Award," said Daniel Kline, Vice President, St. Joseph's Healthcare System and Site Administrator, St. Joseph's Wayne Hospital. "A member of our medical team for more than four decades, Dr. Kardos is a highly respected physician-leader and medical practitioner," he added.
Dr. Kardos completed his advanced medical training at Downstate Medical Center alongside a rotating internship at Kings County Hospital. Afterwards Dr. Kardos served a full residency at the Manhattan Eye, Ear & Throat Hospital in New York. Dr. Kardos also pursued further head and neck surgical training at East Orange Veterans Administration Hospital. Having completed such an extensive medical education, Dr. Kardos entered the US Army and served as Chief of Otolaryngology at the Womack Army Hospital, Fort Bragg, NC. Following his medical corps discharge, Dr. Kardos opened a private practice in Paterson, which he moved to Wayne after the opening of the Wayne General Hospital.
For more than 30 years Dr. Kardos served as Chief of the Department of Otolaryngology in Wayne and was instrumental in building up the first otologic surgical service in the area. The Department under Dr. Kardos became pioneers in the use of lasers for head and neck surgery and began performing Endoscopic sinus surgery as well as microlaryngoscopic surgery.
Dr. Kardos served the Wayne Hospital in many aspects for over 43 years including serving as President of the Medical Staff, being appointed as the first Chairman of the Board of Trustees of St. Joseph's Wayne Hospital. Dr. Kardos helped to smooth the introductory transition to St. Joseph's Wayne Hospital and St. Joseph's Healthcare System, assisting in the implementation of values and traditions that have been the backbone of the organization since its founding in 1867.
Dr. Kardos is very active in the medical community as well, having been President of the New Jersey Academy of Ophthalmology and Otolaryngology; currently serving as President of the Board of the Paterson Eye and Ear Infirmary. He is a fellow of the American Academy of Otolaryngology Head & Neck Surgery and the American Rhinologic Society, a member of the Passaic County Medical Society, and a member of the American Medical Association.
Outside of his work, Dr. Kardos enjoys music and is an accomplished organist. Residents of Fair Lawn, Dr. Kardos and his wife Barbara Kardos are the proud parents of three daughters and grandparents of six.
Dr. Kardos currently practices otolaryngology at his Wayne, NJ based office.
