The Emergency Department at St. Joseph's Healthcare System has recently launched an EMS and Disaster Medicine Fellowship program.

Positions Available: Two; beginning July 1, 2010 (start date is negotiable); one-year programs

The goal of this Fellowship is to guide physicians in leadership development in the fields of operations, communications, training, research and administration in a variety of settings. The Fellow will be prepared to lead their institutions and/or EMS services in all EMS activity and disaster planning.

Most EMS and Disaster Medicine Fellows graduate to become medical directors of EMS systems, and are integral in disaster planning in their hospitals and communities. This fellowship also prepares Emergency Medicine Physicians for a career in academic medicine at teaching hospitals, research, administration, and directorship at many levels, not limited to EMS systems.

Fellowship Specifics

• Six clinical 12-hour shifts in ED per month as a teaching attending, and complete various rotations on days off.
• Participate in the Physician Response Program.
• Complete at least one research project and submit the project to a local or national EM conference.
• Attend various EMS and Disaster Preparedness conferences including but not limited to CONTOMS, NAEMSP, AMPA, APF (disaster course in Israel)

Fellowship Rotation Schedule

• ALS - SJRMC paramedics
• BLS - Paterson Fire Department
• Physician Response - Respond to ALS calls throughout the shift, respond when NJ EMS task Force dispatches the vehicle.
• Aeromedicine - Air One rotation, Newton, NJ
• Saint Vincent’s Hospital ALS – NYC based ALS Rotation
• Medical Direction – Review, redesign protocols, and ALS box-calls, quality review
• Communications – MICOM ALS dispatch center
• Administrative - New Jersey State Office of Emergency Medical Services
• Disaster Medicine - The fellow will become a member of NJ EMS Task Force. AFP (Israeli disaster course) DMAT/NDMS
• Research - All research projects will be considered for publication

Additional Information

• Compensation will be at the current PGY5 level for salary and benefits package.

Requirements for Application

• Must be a physician Board Certified or board eligible in Emergency Medicine
• EMS Experience preferred but not required
• Letter of recommendation from your residency director and EMS medical director
