Paterson, NJ [January 1, 2010] – On January 1, 2010, St. Joseph’s Healthcare System’s nurses joined in a global caring initiative started by Dr. Jean Watson, PhD, RN, AHN-BC, FAAN called the Million Nurse Global Caring Field Project.

Nurses and nursing serve as an archetype of human caring in the world.  Nurses are uniting during 2010 to celebrate the 2010 International Year of the Nurse with the Nightingale Initiative for Global Health and two proposed United Nations Resolutions –to radiate heart-centered Love and Caring through individual and collective global meditations to honor and support millions of nurses. 

St. Joseph’s Healthcare System’s care delivery model, the Watson Theory of Human Caring, created by Jean Watson, and Relationship-Based Care, continues to evolve into an empowering staff-driven initiative.  The autonomous nature of nursing practice has consistently demonstrated high quality provision of care in a patient-centered environment. Our model is supported with computer systems that help manage and communicate nursing documentation. With each passing month, high tech documentation is becoming a way of life in our nursing practice.  Daily, we strive to provide a healthy work environment for our nurses. An example of this is the development of the Watson Room, where nurses have a place to decompress from stresses at work.

St. Joseph's Regional Medical Center and St. Joseph's Children's Hospital are three-time recipients of the Magnet Award for Nursing Excellence.
