Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI) is the result of an external force striking the head causing a physical disruption in normal brain functioning. TBIs frequently occur as a result of a car accident, sports head-injury, or any event that causes a sudden blow to the head. Incidentally, due to the nature of the artillery used in the War in Iraq, TBI is considered the ‘signature wound' of this war. Unfortunately much remains unknown in the realm of diagnosis, immediate care, and long term treatment of these devastating injuries.
In October of 2008, St. Joseph's Regional Medical Center proudly hosted the International Conference on Behavioral Health and Traumatic Brain Injury. During the four-day Conference, 100 doctors, researchers, and scientists gathered from around the globe to discuss issues facing our wounded warriors, identify the barriers to treatment, and strategize on improvements for the continuum of care. The Conference participants were broken down into four work groups. Each of the work groups developed recommendations for immediate solutions to care for the injured.
