Ethics facilitates moral reflection on the clinical and business aspects of healthcare. Ethics aims to help individuals, groups, and the institution become who and what they say they are. Ethical contemplation seeks guidance from varied sources including the Gospel, the Catholic moral tradition, the Mission and Values of St. Joseph's, and The Ethical and Religious Directives for Catholic Health Care (ERD's).
As modern technology has advanced the ability to diagnose and treat complex diseases, it has also brought to the forefront major ethical questions regarding the continuation or withholding and withdrawal of treatment.
Because of these concerns, the Ethics Consultation Service is available to address ethical dilemmas facing the healthcare team, the patient and the family. Acknowledging there often is not one right answer, the Ethics Consultation Service provides a mechanism for conflict resolution in relation to ethical healthcare options.
To explore the possibility of initiating an ethics consultation, contact the coordinator of the Ethics Consult Service by calling 973.754.3633 during normal business hours. You will receive a reply to your request within a reasonable timeframe.
If it is after business hours, please call 973.754.2000 and the on-call person for the Ethics Consult Service will be notified.
