The Speech-Language Pathology Department at St. Joseph’s Healthcare System offers diagnostic and therapeutic services to inpatient and outpatient children and adults with a wide variety of speech and language disorders.
Comprehensive evaluations and treatment are provided in English and Spanish by our professional staff of speech-language pathologists. All speech-language pathologists are licensed by the State of New Jersey and hold the Certificate of Clinical Competence from the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association (ASHA).
Evaluations and therapy are provided for many communication disorders including articulation disorders, delayed speech and language development, autistic spectrum disorder, vocal cord dysfunction, and voice disorders. In addition, speech therapy services are available for adults with dysarthria, or slurred speech, and aphasia or language impairment as a result of neurological problems such as stroke or head injury.
Therapists trained in Lee Silverman Voice Treatment (LSVT) are available to help strengthen vocal loudness, a problem often found in Parkinson's patients. Speech-language pathologists are part of the multidisciplinary team on our Neurological (Stroke) Unit, providing individualized evaluation and treatment programs.
In the Voice Center, videostroboscopic examination of the structure and function of the larynx and vocal cords is performed by the speech-language pathologist in conjunction with the otolaryngologist. This state-of-the-art examination of the larynx is particularly important for individuals with persistent hoarseness.
All patients, after receiving a comprehensive evaluation, have an individualized treatment plan developed. This plan of care is reviewed with the patient or family/parent prior to start of treatment.
