Program Information

Welcome to the St. Joseph's Regional Medical Center General Surgery Residency web page. We offer an exciting residency committed to training the highest level of physician and skilled surgeon. Our vision is graduating the academically based, broadly trained self-sufficient surgeon who can move directly into fellowship or practice with equal confidence. All specialties are represented on premise, and essentially all of your training will be conducted at St. Joseph's. Our residents participate in two outside rotations; one at the Valley Hospital, Ridgewood, NJ for focused hepato-biliary/minimally invasive surgery and one at St. Barnabas, Livingston, NJ for transplant. We have a very committed faculty with more than 50 boarded surgeons covering General Surgery, Trauma, Critical Care, Pediatric Surgery, Vascular Surgery, Thoracic Surgery, Cardiothoracic, ENT, Urology, and Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery. Residents are involved in managing trauma on a daily basis. We see more than 1000 major traumas each year. Our Emergency Department volume is the busiest in the state at over 130,000 visits per year and our recently opened Critical Care building has expanded our ED, adding 56 Critical Care beds, 12 new operating theaters and a new rooftop helistop capable of accepting larger medical helicopters with emergency procedure space.

St. Joseph's Regional Medical Center is a major affiliate of the University of New England College of Osteopathic Medicine; and we are a fully accredited AOA/ACOS program. We accept 4 individuals for PGY-1 resident positions each year.
