NJN Examines Brain Injuries in Cheerleaders - News and Features

A growing number of 135,000 kids who turn up in ER rooms across the nation with concussions are cheerleaders. Dr. Vincent McInerney, Director of Sports Medicine at St. Joseph's Regional Medical Center advises that cheerleading is very dangerous because the brain is in fluid and sloshes around more frequently than in males. Kristen Gunning, DePaul High School Cheerleader was sent to St. Joseph's Trauma in Paterson received a stunning blow losing feeling in her extremities and returned very shortly after to cheerleading. Cheryl Cheff, Neuroscience Manager for St. Joseph's Healthcare System notes the dangers of being injured a second time where the damage can be more serious and long-lasting. A computer program in St. Joseph's Wayne Hospital, a division of St. Joseph's Regional Medical Center, now offers neurological testing via a computer program called IMPACT, which measures an athlete's brain function.
