Pediatric Feeding and Swallowing Disorders - Take Care

Featured guests Dr. Peggy Eicher, Medical Director of The Center for Pediatric Feeding and Swallowing Disorders, and Dr. Merrill Berkowitz, Behavior Analyst, at St. Joseph's Regional Medical Center help explain what's being done to treat eating disorders in children and how to cure these serious problems.
Dr. Merril Berkowitz and Dr. Peggy Eicher discuss with Dr. Max Gomez about children who have difficulty swallowing and refuse to chew and eat. The segment follows recent patient Benjamin Schuckman who went through feeding camp at St. Joseph's Regional Medical Center in Paterson, NJ. Medical issues tend to be the initial cause of feeding behavior however children can learn ways of manipulation and learn a pattern that helps them develop behavioral problems as opposed to just medically-focused issues. Another patient is focused on when born with a cleft palate and experienced serious difficulty with feeding and swallowing. Surgery at the age of 2 will close the cleft palate and the baby's chin will grow in until then. The program at the hospital provides intense day centers as well as an outpatient center where local children can return to. It helps in all cases to have documented history of the child's issue since birth along with associated issues such as sleeping.
