Karen A. Keaney, FNP, CWOCN, Niche Coordinator, St. Joseph's Healthcare System describes how St. Joseph's has adopted a new caring system to help specifically treat our growing elder population.
St. Joseph's Healthcare System recognizes the need to care for our growing geriatric population, to help achieve this care St. Joseph's has been an active member in the Niche program. Nurses Improving Care for Health System Elders since 2006 has helped St. Joseph's better address geriatric needs. New principles include instituting communal dining in the activity room and mobilizing the patient to prevent functional decline. We have also reduced restraint usage via our diversional activities with our diversional aprons and Snoezelin cart designed to calm and redirect agitated patients. Specialty beds with yellow wristbands and socks as well as pictures of stars on windows in patient rooms all help calm patients as well. We continue to seek new and innovative strategies and with the modernization of our hospital new rooms and equipment enhance our ability to care for this aging population.
