Outstanding Surgical Case - News and Features
A dream team of doctors was formed at St. Joseph's Regional Medical Center to help a Dominican Republic woman who has been living with a serious medical condition. News 12 New Jersey reports on the surgery.
For 12 years a woman from the Dominican Republic lived with the repercussions of an infection after brain surgery which destroyed part of her skull exposing the front section of her brain. Dr. Silvio Podda of St. Joseph's Regional Medical Center in Paterson NJ leads the operating team and for the more than 20 years he has been working with heads he has never seen a larger wound of this type in a head.
Dr. Alphonsus Doerr and Gary Breslow will accompany Podda in an 8-hour surgery to rebuild the forehead using a muscle from her abdomen and restore blood flow with a brain graft.
The woman has endured 15 unsuccessful surgeries in the past and has been disappointed before many times but has high hopes for the procedure Dr. Podda has proposed.
