Women's Heart Disease - Take Care

Featured guests Dr. Robert Faillace, Cardiologist, Caroline Strimike, Cardiovascular Advanced Practice Nurse, and Margaret Latrella, Cardiovascular Advanced Practice Nurse, of the Women's Heart Center of St. Joseph's Regional Medical Center as they help to explore women's heart disease.
The leading cause of death in women is heart disease, yet most do not realize their risk level. More than 250,000 women die each year, American women are 4 to 6 times more likely to die from heart disease than breast cancer.
Women may feel fatigued, tired, or have shortness of breath as warning signs as opposed to the typical pressure on the chest symptom usually attributed in men. These symptoms are called prodromal symptoms that occur prior to the onset of a disease and should be paid close attention to.
The segment follows a woman patient who suffered from strange symptoms and pursued the problem.
Risk factors are blood pressure, cholesterol levels, blood sugar levels, waist circumference, triglyceride levels, body fat analysis, circulation in legs, arteries for disruption of blood flow and a larger evaluation of all risk factors. The assumption used to be if a woman is pre-menopausal that the risk factors would not be there, which we now know is false and that women are not protected pre-menopause.
Another segment covers a St. Joseph's Regional Medical Center employee getting screened for heart disease with a stent now in place and her risk factors now in control as a result of free screenings for employees.
The larger muscles in the body, heart and brain for example, are highly impacted by diabetes which puts the victim at a much higher risk of heart disease. The most important message of this segment is to stay healthy and keep your heart in mind and take control of your own health instead of relying on medical care.
