St. Joseph's Healthcare System offers a life-changing test to patients which is saving the lives of area firefighters as reported by Dr. Max Gomez, CBS News.
Nearly half of all firefighter deaths come from heart disease. A simple test tells them if they are at risk saving their lives. Firefighters are at high risk of heart attacks during or right after fighting flames. The added stresses of the job as well as weight of the equipment and adrenaline spikes all put them at greater risk. More than 500 firefighters got Calcium Scans as a result of a statewide Union Firefighters Initiative to educate and get tests for members.
Dr. Elliott Brown, St. Joseph's Regional Medical Center, explains how a rapid CT looks for early signs of heart disease such as calcified plaque in heart arteries. Nearly half of the hundreds who participated in the scan fall in the category of developing heart disease without other symptoms.
