Therapeutic Cooling - Health Tips

An estimated 1000 lives a year can be saved with more timely cardiac care.
Therapeutic Hypothermia is a brain resuscitation, we know that cooling a patient post cardiac arrest will preserve neurologic function. We have now taken cooling to the patient, if they arrest at the supermarket or at home our paramedics are skilled that they initiate cardiac cooling at the scene minutes before they arrive at the Emergency Department, those minutes can mean the difference between a working brain and a non-functional brain. Cooling has to be continued, not only does it start in the field it continues in the emergency department and has to continue in the critical care unit 24 hours. Then after that there's a 12 hour period of re-warming until the brain is functioning again. "I cried when I woke up, when people were telling me what happened to me I couldn't help it tears were just rolling down my face and I couldn't say two words without crying because I just felt that I'd been given life back again," says patient Ken Woodbury who received therapeutic cooling in the field for the first time in the state of New Jersey and has resumed a fully functional life.
