Family Preservation Services (FPS) is an intensive, in-home, crisis intervention and education program that targets families who are under the supervision of the Department of Children & Families (DCF), Division of Child Protection and Permanency (DCP&P) and whose children are either determined to be at imminent risk of out-of-home placement or preparing for reunification.
The goals of the program are to:
- Ensure child safety
- Stabilize families and/or support reunification
- Prevent out-of-home placement
- Improve family functioning
- Link families with appropriate community resources
Services include assessments, skill-based interventions, counseling, referral/linkage to concrete services and related support. Services are provided in the family’s home or related environment, as circumstances warrant. The program staff offers flexible, family centered scheduling/availability, including 24-hour accessibility via cellular phone. Program services are intensive, providing families with no less than five hours of direct face-to-face interactions each week for a maximum of eight weeks. Bilingual Spanish services are available.
All referrals for services are made solely by DCP&P local offices. Family participation in the program is voluntary.
