Applicants interested in the Orthopedic Surgery Residency Program must apply through the Electronic Residency Application Service (ERAS), sponsored by the Association of American Medical Colleges. No application outside of ERAS will be considered. Our program participates in the National Resident Matching Program (NRMP). All applicants must have successfully completed three years of approved medical or osteopathic school curriculum and currently be in good standing during their fourth year.
A residency selection committee will review each candidate’s application carefully. The ERAS applications must be completed in its entirety, including:
- ERAS Common Application Form
- Transcript
- Photograph
- Medical Student Performance Evaluation (MSPE)
- USMLE transcript – Part 1 and Part 2 if completed
- Personal statement – No more than one page in length
- ERAS-generated curriculum vitae
- Three letters of recommendation
After reviewing all applications, interviews will be offered to select candidates. Interviews are typically conducted in January, but given the current situation with COVID, we are finalizing plans for this year and will provide updates when available.

Sub-Internship / Away Rotation Instructions:
Interested third- and fourth-year medical students are encouraged to schedule an elective rotation with the orthopedic team. This commonly consists of a four-week rotation to provide exposure to our program and the orthopedic surgery residents. Students will be exposed to operating room procedures, emergency room diagnosis and treatment, care of in-house patients and the didactic programs.
Key responsibilities of the students include:
- Visiting students are integral members of the orthopedic team and will be actively involved in the care of our patients with appropriate resident or attending supervision. This involves participating in the care of patients in the emergency room and orthopedic clinics, assisting in departmental surgeries, and attending our educational sessions.
- Students will also attend our weekly conferences. During their last week, fourth year students are responsible for preparing and presenting a PowerPoint presentation on an interesting surgery they participated in.
- The students are not required to take night calls or weekend calls; however, interested students can spend additional time assisting junior residents on-call in the evaluation and management of acute orthopedic injuries.
- Medical student rotations can be set up by contacting Cathy Riva, the Residency Coordinator, at rivac@sjhmc.org.
