Program Overview

Established in 2004, our residency program has quickly grown to support the needs of the Emergency Department, hospital, and community. With over 168,000 annual emergency visits, St. Joseph’s University Medical Center has not only become the busiest emergency department in New Jersey, but also the fifth busiest in the country. As a comprehensive stroke center, resuscitation center with 24-hour cardiac catheterization, and a busy trauma center, our 96 -bed Emergency Department  is well-equipped with the necessary tools and resources for exceptional patient care and resident education.

Creating and maintaining an exceptional clinical learning environment for our residents both clinically and academically is top priority.  Residents work one-on-one with an attending on shift and are exposed to critical patients and a significant amount of trauma, starting on day one of their first year. Academically, there is a strong focus on interactive and innovative didactics.  Our monthly grand rounds often feature nationally recognized speakers. In addition, we work to maintain a strong presence at several Emergency Medicine conferences on both a regional and national level, with residents teaching workshops, presenting cases, posters, and original research.  Several of our residents have published book chapters, blog posts, and other educational resources with international dissemination.

Of note, in 2017, we transitioned from a four-year to a three-year ACGME-accredited residency program.  We will be recruiting eight residents per year, for a total of 24.  The department has fellowship-trained teaching faculty in EMS, Ultrasound, Medical Education, Simulation, Critical Care, Toxicology, International Medicine, Geriatrics, Pain and Addiction, and Research.

Perhaps our program’s greatest strength is its culture.  It is a culture established upon transparency, honesty, and progress.  Residents are encouraged to be creative, to be vocal, and to bring new ideas to the table.  We emphasize the importance of speaking up in the name of patient safety, resident wellness, and/or innovation without fear of repercussion.  Thank you for your interest in the St. Joseph’s Emergency Medicine family.
