Program Overview

St. Joseph’s University Medical Center is an academic tertiary care medical center located in Paterson, New Jersey. The city of Paterson is an urban, largely multicultural community in northern New Jersey. The DePaul Center at SJUMC provides over 74,000 outpatient clinic visits annually in a wide variety of primary care and specialty clinics that include: internal medicine, cardiology, pediatrics, and HIV. Ambulatory clinical pharmacy services are an integral part of the care that our patients receive.

Our team of highly trained ambulatory care pharmacists includes specialists covering the following areas: Anticoagulation, Internal Medicine, Diabetes, Cardiology, and Infectious Diseases (including HIV, Hepatitis C). Our pharmacists are actively involved with research activities, mentorship and teaching. Members of our team are involved with pharmacy organizational and legislative initiatives on a state and national level.

Purpose

PGY2 pharmacy residency programs build on Doctor of Pharmacy (Pharm.D.) education and PGY1 pharmacy residency programs to contribute to the development of clinical pharmacists in specialized areas of practice. PGY2 residencies provide residents with opportunities to function independently as practitioners by conceptualizing and integrating accumulated experience and knowledge and incorporating both into the provision of patient care that improves medication therapy. Residents who successfully complete an accredited PGY2 pharmacy residency should possess competencies that qualify them for clinical pharmacist and/or faculty positions and position them to be eligible for attainment of board certification in the specialized practice area (when board certification for the practice area exists).
