Hello and welcome to St. Joseph’s University Medical Center’s (SJUMC) Pulmonary Critical Care Fellowship Program.

Our program, one of the oldest Pulmonary Medicine fellowship programs, started in 1978 as a two-year Pulmonary Medicine training program, and in 2015 was changed to a three-year combined Pulmonary and Critical Care Medicine program.  Our three-year ACGME-accredited PCCM Program emphasizes evidenced-based medicine, innovation, and trainee wellness. 

Founded in 1867 by the Sisters of Charity, St. Joseph’s Hospital has been committed to serving and healing the ill and the poor with compassion.  Our primary clinical site, located in Paterson, NJ serves an urban population with a diverse ethnic and cultural background and a wide range of clinical pathology and disease presentation stages.

Pulmonary Disease training includes active inpatient pulmonary consult services, an outpatient service during fellow continuity clinics; additionally, fellows get the opportunity to participate in the Paterson board of health TB clinic, practice performing and interpreting pulmonary function tests, and cardiopulmonary exercise tests. They also gain experience preforming bronchoscopy, EBUS and bronchothermoplasty.  Critical Care training exposes our fellows to advanced mechanical ventilator management, bedside/endoscopy suite/OR-based critical care procedures, point-of-care ultrasound (POCUS) training and education. Fellows have 4.5 months of research and elective time to help them prepare for their career goals.

Once their training nears completion, our successful graduates are offered and accept from a mix of academic and private career practice opportunities across the United States and some chose to stay and become part of our faculty.
