The video above was presented at the 39th Annual St. Joseph's Regional Medical Center Charity Ball to honor the Kendrick P. Lance, MD Distinguished Physician Award recipient, Robert C. Amoruso, MD, FCCP.

Dr. Amoruso has practiced Pulmonary Medicine and Critical Care Medicine for the past 34 years at St. Joseph’s Regional Medical Center in Paterson, NJ. He earned a B.A. from Ohio Wesleyan University and has served on their Alumni Board of Directors. He spent a year in medical research at Case Western Reserve University prior to attending the University of Bologna School of Medicine, Italy, where he received his medical doctorate degree. He completed his Internship and Residency at St. Joseph’s Hospital where he was elected House Staff President. Dr. Kendrick P. Lance, the namesake for this award, was his mentor and Chair of Medicine. After completing a Pulmonary Fellowship at College Hospital (UMDNJ) he joined Dr. Thomas Ramunda in private practice in 1981. He holds certifications by the American Board of Internal Medicine in Pulmonary and Internal Medicine.

During his entire professional career, Dr. Amoruso has been integrally involved with and dedicated to St. Joseph’s Hospital, participating on and leading many committees. He has been nominated to serve in numerous leadership roles, including several terms as member-at-large of the Medical Board, President of the Medical Staff and member of the Hospital Board of Trustees. In 2001, he was asked to serve as Interim Chairman of the Department of Medicine, a position he assumed full-time in 2003.

A physician who supports interdisciplinary collaboration, Dr. Amoruso works closely with the Departments of Nursing, Pharmacy and other Medical Departments to develop or lead many successful hospital programs, including End-of-Life care, STOMP Sepsis, Early Progressive Mobility, DVT prophylaxis, Simulation Lab; receiving the NJHA award for eliminating ventilator-associated infections in the ICU, and the American Heart Association/Stroke Association Gold Award for the stroke program. He was, and still is, integrally involved in the implementation of the initial Patient Safety Program, helping to implement the Joint Commission National Patient Safety Goals.

Dr. Amoruso was the recipient of the NJ Society of Health System Pharmacists APPEX Award, the Institute for Nursing, NJ State Nurses Association Apple Award and the Internal Medicine Residency Faculty Teaching Award. He received the American College of Chest Physicians Community Service Award for his involvement in developing a voluntary Medical Assistance Program for uninsured individuals at St. Mary’s Church in Pompton Lakes.

Dr. Amoruso was raised in Clifton and now resides in Wayne. He is married to Eileen, a nurse who he met at St. Joseph. They have 3 children all in the healthcare field, Katie and Christina in nursing, and Dan and his wife Dawn are physicians.
