The Binder Autism Center, as part of the Child Development Center at St. Joseph’s Children’s Hospital, employs an interdisciplinary and multidisciplinary approach to the diagnosis of autism spectrum disorders.
The mission of the BAC is to provide a systemic approach to the evaluation, diagnosis, treatment and societal integration of the children diagnosed with ASD. Treatment begins with evaluation and diagnosis and continues throughout our program’s individual sessions, support groups, skills groups, educational workshops, social functions and activities.
St. Joseph’s Health recognizes the need to provide answers and support for these children and their families. Our focus is to provide support services, family resources, and programming to increase social interactions, sibling interaction, caregiver involvement, assessments, family events and more.
Telehealth services are available for follow up appointments and medication -check ins with the team medical providers.

Family Services
Why Group Therapy?
Groups are an effective means for helping individuals develop social interaction skills. They offer opportunities to observe practice, and receive feedback. Such skills include communicating with others, making friends, playing games, turn taking sportsmanship, homework, self-management, and dealing with one’s emotions and more. Parents and siblings attend their own group sessions. These groups address a variety of topics based on the needs of the learner.
Why Recreation?
Recreation provides an opportunity to be a part of a team, interact with peers, and learn to take direction from a coach and to learn that you do not always win. To date BAC’s recreational and therapeutic interventions, include the Binder Bowling League, Health & Wellness, Yoga and Karate. We have experienced an increase in demand for recreational programming as families report positive outcomes, such as increased physical activity interaction improved communication and social skills, and self-regulation behaviors.
Why the Arts?
Our Performing Arts program enables learners to participate in dance class, culminating in a recital. Dance/movement therapy is gaining more traction for its unique capacity to address some of the core deficits experienced by ASD learners. With a focus on the fine arts, our art therapy program also provides an opportunity for peer interaction, cooperation And other social skills in a relaxed, fun setting. Our BAC artists participate in an annual art show, allowing them to showcase their talents in a formal setting that often promotes a positive outcome for the entire family.
Why Summer Camp?
Children diagnosed with autism spectrum disorder benefit from an extended school year (ESY). However many districts do not offer ESY and if they do, programming ends in July. When out of school for an extended period of time, learners with ASD may regress significantly from academic, social and behavioral perspectives. Summer camp provides an opportunity to fill the void and continue learning with a different peer group and set of counselors.
BAC Summer Camp
Why Family Events?
Having a child with ASD can be a lonely experience. Social events are often difficult as “friends and family” may not know how to interact with a child with autism. Our events promote networking amongst our families and socialization for our learners. We also feature quarterly Mom and Dad social events to give the caregivers a fun evening to help lessen the stresses of daily life.

If your family income is below 300% of the Federal Poverty Guidelines, you may be eligible for one of the low income assistance programs (e.g., Medicaid or Charity Care). If your income is 300% or above, and you have no insurance, you will be eligible for a hospital discounted fee equal to the “amount generally billed” for emergency or other medically necessary services.

Please keep in mind that you will receive separate statements for each hospital, employed physician and contracted providers. For instance, you will also receive separate bills for use of the hospital facilities in addition to the professional service fee of the physician. Other tests that may be billed separately include x-rays, laboratory, cardiology and consulting physicians; such services are provided by independent physicians who are not employees of the hospital.
You have the right to receive all the hospital care that is necessary for the proper diagnosis and treatment of your illness or injury. According to federal law, your discharge date must be determined solely by your medical needs - not by DRG’s or Medicare payments.
Because we understand that hospital bills can be confusing, we assign a Patient Financial Representative to answer your questions, and iron out any difficulties. The representative who will handle your account will meet with you during the Pre-Admission Testing process, or shortly after you are admitted. He or she will discuss arrangements for paying your bill and will be glad to answer any questions you may have about charges, your insurance coverage, or payment.
