The Gastroenterology Fellowship at St. Joseph’s University Medical Center is a comprehensive and immersive three-year training program designed to prepare physicians for a successful career in gastroenterology. As a testament to the strength of our program, we have been training gastroenterologists for almost 50 years. Our program offers a stimulating environment where fellows can acquire the knowledge, skills, and clinical expertise necessary to provide exceptional care to patients with gastrointestinal disorders. Our program offers comprehensive training in general endoscopic procedures, including: Colonoscopy, Upper Endoscopy (EGD), Push Enteroscopy, Endoscopic Mucosal Resection (EMR), and Endoscopic Retrograde Cholangiopancreatography (ERCP) in native and surgically altered anatomy. Additionally, fellows gain exposure to endoscopic ultrasound (EUS), double balloon enterosocpy (DBE), Direct Cholangioscopy (SpyGlass), Barrett’s Esophagus ablation and reflux management as well as third space endoscopic procedures.
Our fellowship provides hands-on experience in all aspects of gastroenterology, in the inpatient and outpatient settings as well as in the endoscopy suite. Under the guidance of experienced faculty, trainees actively participate in the diagnosis and treatment of a diverse range of gastrointestinal and liver diseases. We emphasize a multidisciplinary approach to promote a comprehensive understanding of gastroenterological conditions. The fellowship curriculum incorporates a robust didactic component to enhance fellows’ knowledge base. Regular educational conferences cover a broad range of topics, including physiology, pathophysiology, emerging diagnostic and treatment modalities, as well as the practice of evidence-based medicine. We believe in fostering a culture of inquiry and innovation by providing resources, mentorship and ancillary support to help our fellows pursue their research interests and contribute to the advancement of our specialty.
St. Joseph’s University Medical Center strives to cultivate future leaders in gastroenterology by nurturing their professional development and helping them achieve their goals. Patient care lies at the heart of our program. Fellows develop strong communication skills, empathy, and a patient-centered approach to a diverse patient population. Our fellowship aims to produce well-rounded and proficient gastroenterologists who are capable of providing excellent and empathetic patient care. We invite passionate and devoted individuals to join our program and embark on a transformative journey that will shape their careers and impact the lives of those they serve.
Mission
The Gastroenterology Fellowship Program is a multifaceted, multidisciplinary and comprehensive program providing training in all areas of gastroenterology. The Program strives to provide exceptionally rich clinical and didactic training and to provide a wide array of clinical and basic science research opportunities. The core purpose of the gastroenterology fellowship program at SJUMC is to prepare fellows for the independent practice of gastroenterology and hepatology in the setting of private/hospital based practice and/or academia. The program serves a very ethnically and socio-economically diverse patient population drawing from inner city as well as suburban communities. Our mission is to teach our fellows how to provide high-quality and safe care with dedication and compassion to all humans, irrespective of race, gender, religion, social or economic status. Our mission is in direct line with the larger mission of the Sisters of Charity of St Elizabeth, sponsors of SJUMC.
