Since the inception of percutaneous coronary interventions, the field has progressed exponentially in the available technology, the quality of coronary interventional procedures, the risk-level of the undertaken procedures, and the applied techniques. There has been a concomitant increase in the number of patients undergoing percutaneous coronary interventions.
The goal of the training program in interventional cardiology is to prepare the cardiology fellow for a high level of clinical performance in interventional cardiology. This includes the development of appropriate clinical judgment in selecting patients for cardiac interventional procedures and a high level of technical skill in performing them.
After completing the training program in interventional cardiology, the fellow should understand the effectiveness and limitations of coronary interventional procedures in order to select patients and procedure types appropriately; achieve the appropriate cognitive knowledge and technical skills needed to perform interventional cardiac procedures at the level of quality attainable through the present state of the art; foster an attitude of life-long learning and critical thinking skills needed to gain from experience and incorporate new developments; and, understand and commit to quality assessment and improvement in procedure performance.
Realizing that interventional cardiology is one element in a continuum of skills, treatments, and knowledge that are required to provide patient care, the Program Director of the adult Cardiovascular Disease Fellowship Program and the Program Director of the Interventional Cardiology Fellowship Program will integrally affiliate both programs. This symbiotic affiliation will enable both programs to achieve their respective training goals.
Mission & Goals
The mission of the Interventional Cardiology Fellowship Program is to educate fellows in the comprehensive assessment and management of patients in need of interventional cardiac care. The Interventional Cardiology Fellowship Program is a multifaceted, multidisciplinary and comprehensive program providing training in all areas of interventional cardiology. The Program strives to provide exceptionally rich clinical and didactic training in interventional cardiology and to provide a wide array of clinical and basic science research opportunities. Inpatient learning takes place in the Cardiac Catherization Laboratory and in the outpatient setting during weekly continuity clinics.
