Training location
St. Joseph’s University Medical Center is a major academic medical center in Paterson, New Jersey and state designated trauma center that cares for the most complex and routine cases. We also utilize the DePaul Ambulatory Center located across the street as the primary site for ambulatory education. Paterson is located just 16 miles from New York City with easily accessible mass transit options. Popular travel locations for local residents include the Jersey Shore, Atlantic City, Manhattan, The Hamptons, and the Poconos. Paterson is home to the Paterson Great Falls National Park, The Lambert Castle, and the Paterson Museum.
Educational opportunity
St. Joseph’s University Medical Center is a 650 bed tertiary care academic center with a 183,000 square foot critical care building housing 56 private critical care rooms. Our residents go to every Rapid Response Team activation, every Code Blue, and help facilitate critical care transfers. Our residents are active caretakers on every floor. Our advantage is found in the diversity of patient pathology seen in this incredible center.
Simulation Lab
The Simulation Training Laboratory enables participants to engage in an extraordinary educational experience. The 5,000 square foot, state-of-the-art facility is located on the newly renovated St. Joseph’s University Medical Center campus. Clinical scenarios are re-created through the use of specialized task trainers, live patient actors, and high fidelity human patient simulators. Each simulated encounter incorporates all of the intricate details that would be present in the assessment and treatment of actual patients. Medical students and professionals from all disciplines, engaged in a career-long process of continued learning, are able to further develop expertise by actual performance in sessions that range from individual technical skills to the most complex inter-professional treatment scenarios.
Scholarly Activity
All IM residents are required to participate in a “scholarly activity” during their 3 years of training. A resident research committee coordinates research efforts and its members are available to assist residents.
Population Served
We are a tertiary academic center located in Paterson, New Jersey serving the greater Passaic County referral center. The DePaul Ambulatory Center is a cornerstone for the underserved in the greater Paterson area.
Volunteer Opportunities
Our residents participate in various health fairs in the surrounding area offering screenings and education to the public, speak at local elementary and high schools to encourage the pursuit of higher education, and contribute to various food and toy drives throughout the year. We are always looking for ideas on how to give back to our surrounding community!
Teaching Opportunities/Residents as Teachers
At our core we are a teaching facility and have a variety of training programs. We are particularly proud of the robust amount of medical students who rotate throughout the internal medicine residency program via floors, ambulatory, and medical subspecialties.
Residents have multiple opportunities to grow as educators throughout their training. During inpatient general medicine floors, residents will contribute toward the education and supervise 3rd and 4th year medical students. Senior residents also serve as team leaders of the inpatient team, supervising interns.
Resident retreats are held during the year which focuses on team building, leadership and teaching methods to improve skills and communication.
