The department of Dentistry/OMS sponsors three CODA-approved advanced education programs and a non-categorical OMS internship. The oral and maxillofacial surgery residency:
- Enrolls and graduates two residents per year
- Conducts training at St. Joseph’s and three other sites in New Jersey: The VA Medical Center in East Orange, at Monmouth Medical Center and the Center for Advanced Facial Surgery in Shrewsbury and at HMH/Mountainside in Montclair
- The Precident Center for Facial and Dental Medicine opened in March, 2023 and is a technically advanced, world class facility that is home to the St. Josephs OMS faculty practice. Residents have opportunities to participate in the evaluation and management of faculty practice patients at Precident.
- Provides educational opportunities at these sites covering the full spectrum of the specialty and are described in detail in the program’s Curriculum Goals and Objectives
- Serves populations that are ethnically and culturally diverse including many communities with limited resources – Northern New Jersey is one of the most diverse and densely populated regions in the US
- Offers residents the opportunity to travel with faculty on mission trips and encourages voluntary activities that help local communities in need as well as those in more remote underserved areas
- Involves teaching of students on rotation and of residents at lower PGY levels with the understanding that the core curriculum is faculty driven and that the educational process always involves faculty supervision
- Has three former ABOMS Examination Committee members (board examiners) on its faculty, conducts annual mock board exams and produces well-trained graduates, about 90% of whom have achieved ABOMS certification over the last 20 years, most passing both the written and oral examinations on the first attempt
- Offers many benefits including proximity to New York City, a large and diverse patient population, an experienced, skilled and dedicated faculty composed of clinician/educators, excellent facilities and resources and leadership committed to educating residents in an environment conducive to learning
