Expert Care With You Every Step of the Way
Urologic cancers include cancers of the urological system, such as the prostate, bladder, kidneys, and testicles as well as benign and malignant diseases of the adrenal gland. Prostate cancer is the most common cancer in American men other than skin cancer. For some men with prostate changes, the best option may involve receiving little or no treatment—just a schedule of regular screenings and tests at periodic intervals. For others, a more aggressive approach is recommended. Whatever your situation, you can count on St. Joseph’s Health expertise and evidence-based recommendations to give you guidance.
St. Joseph’s Health is a leader in diagnosing and treating urologic cancers. From innovative therapies and advanced diagnostics to minimally invasive surgery and the latest in radiation therapy, we offer cutting edge medical technology, proven treatments and exceptional support services – all in a comfortable setting close to home. Prostate Cancer Screening
Prostate cancer is a serious disease that is slow to develop, mainly in older men. Typical symptoms, including urinary problems, may not appear at all in the early stages. Preventive screening is one of the most important factors in catching prostate cancer early. A blood test called a prostate specific antigen (PSA) test can help detect prostate cancer in its early stages. Men age 55 to 70 years should speak to their doctor about the pros and cons of PSA testing to determine what is right for them based on their medical history and risk level.
Advanced Treatment Options
Treatment of cancer depends on many factors, including your overall health, the type, stage, and location of cancer. We are committed to providing you with the best possible treatment for your specific cancer and your personal needs. Effective treatment of cancer requires a coordinated team of surgical, medical and radiation oncologists with specialized expertise in treating specific cancers. Together they determine the most appropriate treatment plan and provide seamless patient care throughout the entire course of treatment. Whether you need single, dual or a combination of all three therapies, you can be confident that you are receiving the highest level of care. Your treatment plan may include:
- Surgery: Surgery is the primary treatment for mostly younger men and many older men with early-stage prostate cancer. The most common procedure is called radical prostatectomy, which removes the prostate gland and nearby lymph nodes. At St. Joseph’s Health, our surgeons specialize in minimally invasive da Vinci® robotic prostatectomy, a minimally invasive procedure that allows precise and careful removal of the prostate with minimal damage to surrounding tissues. This means better preservation of bladder control and erectile function, less post-operative pain and a faster recovery.
- Radiation Therapy: Radiation therapy is a treatment that uses X-rays to destroy cancer cells and shrink tumors. St. Joseph’s Health uses the most advanced radiation technology available to treat prostate cancer with extreme precision while avoiding normal, healthy tissue.
- Medical Therapy: This treatment uses powerful medicines to destroy or damage cancer cells in order to stop or slow their growth drugs to destroy cancer cells. St. Joseph’s Health offers a broad range of medical oncology options, including chemotherapy, targeted therapy and hormone therapy. Chemotherapy is not a standard treatment for early prostate cancer but may be used if the cancer has spread outside the prostate. Recent studies have shown that newer chemo drugs can help men live a longer and higher quality of life. We also offer hormone therapy, which works by reducing the body’s level of male hormones, called androgens, which prostate cancer cells need to grow.
