St. Joseph’s Health is equipped to handle any type of adult and pediatric emergency using the latest technology, effective treatments, and the highest safety precautions and protocols. We provide advanced care for adults and children experiencing serious medical conditions including heart attack, stroke, and infections, as well as minor emergencies such as broken bones. Our emergency departments are staffed by board-certified physicians highly skilled in treating all medical emergencies as well as award-winning Magnet nurses with special training in emergency medical care.
An innovator in emergency and trauma services, St. Joseph’s Health provides dedicated pediatric, adult and geriatric emergency departments staffed by specially-trained clinicians. In addition, St. Joseph’s University Medical Center is designated a Level II Trauma Center by the state of New Jersey and a verified Trauma Center by the American College of Surgeons. This means that we are capable of handling critically injured patients and serious traumatic medical conditions.

Whether it’s treating minor emergencies or life-threatening ones, our emergency departments are open 24/7/365 and provide the full spectrum of medical services to all patients who need emergency assistance. We offer the following programs and services:
- A state-designated Level II Trauma Center equipped to handle critically injured patients
- A separate pediatric emergency department to treat to newborns, children, adolescents and young adults
- A dedicated geriatric emergency department designed especially for patients 65 years of age and older.
- Advanced diagnostic images, including X-ray, CT, and ultrasound
- Stroke center with dedicated equipment and specially trained staff
- Lab tests performed in the center for faster results
- Alternatives to Opiates Program, a highly successful unique alternative approach to acute pain management without the use of opioids
- The Life Sustaining Management and Alternatives Program which brings palliative care to patients in the emergency department
