Concussion Center

A concussion is a brain injury that occurs from a blow to the head after a fall, accident, or during contact sports. Symptoms like headaches, dizziness or tiredness often fade within days. If they don’t, concussion specialists at the St. Joseph’s Health are here for you with timely care and support.

St. Joseph’s Health offers comprehensive evaluations, treatment of concussion symptoms, and monitoring to ensure patients recover completely and return to normal activities.  Concussions may cause different symptoms depending on whether they are mild, moderate, or severe. Our board-certified neurologists will do a thorough assessment to determine if you have a concussion, and if so, to what degree.  We will create a personalized plan, using the latest evidence-based therapies, to help manage concussion symptoms and restore function.

Proper concussion management includes the use of baseline and/or post-injury neurocognitive testing. This evaluation helps evaluate the post-injury condition and track recovery for safe return to play.

St. Josph’s Health offers ImPACT (Immediate Post-Concussion Assessment and Cognitive Testing), the leading concussion management program used across high school, collegiate, and professional sports teams.  ImPACT is a user-friendly, computer-based program of neurocognitive evaluations that tracks verbal and visual memory, attention span, brain processing speed, and reaction time. Ideally, athletes first complete a baseline ImPACT test prior to playing sports. If an athlete subsequently experiences a concussion, he or she is re-tested and the baseline data is compared to the post-concussion data to monitor recovery and determine when it is safe for the player to return to active sports.
