Stroke Care

When it comes to strokes, rapid diagnosis and treatment are key.  St. Joseph’s Health is a leader in the diagnosis and treatment of strokes. Our team consists of highly experienced board-certified neurologists, neurosurgeons, neuro-interventionalists, neuro-radiologists, and interventional radiologists that work together with specially trained nurses and therapists to ensure stroke patients receive the right treatment at the right time, which is critical for positive outcomes.  Our expert team is supported by advanced imaging techniques that help facilitate rapid assessment and diagnosis.

St. Joseph’s University Medical Center is certified as a Comprehensive Stoke Center and St. Joseph’s Wayne Medical Center is designated as a Primary Stroke Center.  These designations highlight our quality stroke care and ability to meet the unique and specialized needs of stroke patients. Our stroke programs have also been recognized by the American Heart Association/American Stroke Association’s “Get With The Guidelines” Program and have received the Gold Plus Award for quality stroke care.

Additionally, stroke services include:

  • Rapid diagnosis and treatment by a specially trained Stroke Code Response Team available 24/7
  • Advanced medical therapies including intravenous TPA
  • Neuro-interventional and Neuro-radiology imaging diagnostic technology – including cerebral angiography and mechanical embolectomy procedures
  • A dedicated Neurology Stroke Unit and a 4-bed Neurology Special Care Unit
  • Specialty Stroke Clinic for outpatient follow-up care
  • Neuro-interventional procedures
  • Rehabilitation including speech, swallowing, occupational and physical therapy
  • Pharmaceutical treatment options

If you think that someone may be having a stroke, remember to act F.A.S.T:

  • Face – Ask the person to smile.  Is one side of the face drooping?
  • Arms – Ask the person to raise both arms.  Is one arm weak?
  • Speech – Ask the person to repeat a simple sentence.  Is their speech slurred?
  • Time – Call 911 immediately at the first sign of a stroke
