At St. Joseph’s Health, two specialized teams comprise the Speech-Language Pathology Department — the Speech-Language and Cognition Therapy team and the Swallowing team. By having team members with specialized expertise, we are able to provide comprehensive treatment options to patients while ensuring that they are at the highest quality.

Speech-Language and Cognition Therapy

St. Joseph’s Health Speech-Language and Cognition Therapy offers a variety of diagnostic and treatment services for inpatient and outpatients of all ages who have speech, language, cognitive and voice conditions. Clinicians work closely with each patient, family and the health care team to create an individualized treatment plan to meet each patient’s goals.

Our speech-language pathologists hold master’s degrees, New Jersey licenses, and Certificates of Clinical Competence from The American Association of Speech-Language Pathologists and Audiologists.

Swallowing Therapy

The St. Joseph’s Health Swallowing Team offers a variety of diagnostic and treatment services to inpatient and outpatient adults. The clinicians on this specialty team strive to achieve patient goals through the use of individualized treatment plans that include on-sight completion of modified barium swallow and flexible endoscopic evaluation of swallowing studies.  

Our team members hold master’s degrees, New Jersey licenses and Certificates of Clinical Competence from The American Association of Speech-Language Pathologists and Audiologists.

  • Expiratory Muscle Strength Training (EMST)
  • Flexible endoscopic evaluation of swallowing
  • Management of dysphagia in progressive disorders (PD, MS, Dementia, Huntington’s)
  • Manual therapy
  • Modified barium swallow studies
  • Post-stroke dysphagia rehabilitation
  • Prophylactic head & neck cancer treatment
  • Radiation fibrosis syndrome/radiation-induced dysphagia
  • Supragastric belching management
