Personalized, Supportive Care
At St. Joseph’s Health, we respect your choices, and believe in giving you options for your birthing experience. One of these options includes midwifery. Our team of nurse midwives provides personalized care and expertise in a welcoming environment that fosters safety, mutual understanding and respect.
What is a Nurse Midwife?
Certified nurse-midwives are advanced nurse practitioners with graduate education in women’s health care and midwifery. They focus on each patient’s unique maternity experience and embrace holistic approaches, which can include alternative and complementary therapies. Midwives specialize in laboring patients who prefer unmedicated births. Their focus is on supporting patients through their labor to facilitate a normal vaginal delivery, with as little intervention as safely possible. They are specialists in low-risk pregnancy, childbirth, postpartum and gynecologic care.
Midwife Services
St. Joseph’s Health midwives care for you during all stages of pregnancy and childbirth. Our highly skilled midwives take the time to get to know you and will listen to your goals and concerns, ensuring you’re well supported emotionally and physically. They help expecting parents and families create empowering birth experiences in the comfort and safety of a hospital setting. During labor, your midwife will assist you in delivering your baby as naturally as possible, offering comfort and support with stress-relieving holistic therapies, hands-on adjustment and minimized medical intervention. They offer alternative comfort measures, such as hydrotherapy, for pain management in labor. However, you can rest assured that a St. Joseph’s Health obstetrician is available on-site 24/7 should extra medical care be required.
St. Josephs’ Health midwives offers the following services:
- Comprehensive prenatal care for low-risk and moderate-risk pregnancies and births
- Labor and delivery care in the safety of a hospital
- Pain management options from alternative and complementary therapies to epidural
- Postpartum (after birth) care
- Breastfeeding/infant feeding support

The health of you and your baby are of the utmost importance. Should complications arise, your midwife will work with a board-certified obstetrician and the rest of the St. Joseph’s Health birthing team to ensure you and your baby are safe and healthy throughout the delivery process.
In addition to caring for expectant parents, our midwives also offer well-care services for patients at all stages of life, including:
