Regional Perinatal Center

St. Joseph’s Health is designated a Level III Regional Perinatal Center by the New Jersey Department of Health. This designation recognizes our expertise in delivering the highest level of prenatal and newborn care for high-risk mothers and acutely ill newborns. With state-of-the-art technology and a staff of medical experts, we are equipped to handle any emergency for mothers and babies before, during and after delivery.

Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU)
When a child is born too early or experiences health complications, they require gentle, careful care. For newborns needing specialized care, we are home to a Level III neonatal intensive care unit (NICU), providing the highest level of newborn care for the most urgent health conditions.

Centering Pregnancy
Centering Pregnancy is a unique way to experience prenatal care, bringing mothers-to-be out of the exam room and into a comfortable group setting. Through health assessment, interactive learning and community building, the program delivers better health outcomes and a better patient experience.

Midwifery
St. Joseph’s Health understands that every woman is different — each with her own physical, social, spiritual and psychological health needs.  We offer a midwifery program to provide a holistic complement to traditional OB/GYN care.

Doula Services
Women who give birth at St. Joseph’s Health have access to a doula – a trained professional who provides non-medical care to women through pregnancy, labor, and childbirth.  From emotional support and guidance to serving as a birthing coach during labor and everything in between, your doula acts as a guide to help create the best experience possible. A doula provides physical and emotional support and serves as a companion, support person and resource. Doulas can help with breathing techniques, positional changes, and relaxation strategies.  They also connect birthing parents with local community resources and provide ongoing social and emotional support. Certified doulas are available onsite at St. Joseph’s University Medical Center 24/7.

Infant Feeding
Breastfeeding helps you bond with your baby, while providing nutritional and health benefits to both parent and baby.  At St. Joseph’s Health, we know that the decision to breastfeed is a personal one. We will provide you with information on the benefits of breastfeeding so you can make your own informed choices on how to feed your little one. No matter what you decide, we’re here to support you with whatever you need.

If you decide to breastfeed, our team of certified lactation consultations and nurses are always nearby, and available to assist you through your first feedings, answer questions, and address any issues like latching difficulties or low milk production.  Even once you are home, you can still call us at any time with any questions.  St. Joseph’s Health is committed to helping new moms and babies be successful in their breastfeeding journey.

Childbirth Classes
St. Joseph’s Health provides a variety of classes and informational resources for new parents. We offer a daily Baby Basics class to introduce parents to all aspects of infant care and safety.  Topics include feeding, bathing, skin care, and characteristics of the newborn.  We also provide informational sessions on breastfeeding by our certified lactation specialists discussing latching-on, proper positioning, and how to establish a milk supply. Discharge classes are given to assist the parent to transition to home life.  For more information on classes, please call 973-754-3344.
