Dustin M. Riccio, MD, Assumes Role as President & CEO of St. Joseph’s Health

PATERSON, NJ (January 8, 2024) – With a celebratory clap out and passing of the baton, Dustin M. Riccio, MD, MBA, has taken the reins as the 11th President and Chief Executive Officer of St. Joseph’s Health. Dr. Riccio assumes the position from Kevin J. Slavin, who retired after a remarkable 42 years of service in New Jersey healthcare.

He was instrumental in sustaining our 155-year mission and enhancing access to quality healthcare throughout the region,” says Wilfredo Fernandez, Chairperson, St. Joseph’s Health Board of Trustees. “Now we are thrilled to welcome Dr. Riccio to St. Joseph’s Health. “He brings great insights as a physician, and we are confident he will lead us into our next era of proudly serving our surrounding communities.”

Slavin steered St. Joseph’s Health through the COVID-19 pandemic, leading the organization during one of the most challenging times in healthcare. He also served as chairperson of the board for the New Jersey Hospital Association during 2020 – at the height of the pandemic – playing a critical role in the statewide response.

Dr. Riccio joins the organization after an in-depth, nationwide search to find a dynamic leader with a wealth of experience and commitment to the highest levels of care. A board-certified emergency medicine physician, Dr. Riccio bring over 20 years of diverse leadership experience in the healthcare industry.

For the past 15 years, Dr. Riccio has been a part of Rochester Regional Health in Rochester, New York, serving in various leadership and clinical capacities, including President and Chief Operating Officer of Unity Hospital and Unity Specialty Hospital, as well as President of the Eastern Region of Rochester Regional Health. He also served as President of the Medical Staff for Unity Health System and Chair of the Emergency Department, prior to its merger with Rochester General Hospital in 2014.

Dr. Riccio holds a Bachelor’s Degree in Biology from Bucknell University, a Master’s of Biomedical Science from the  University of South Carolina, and a Master’s of Business Administration from the University of Rochester – Simon Business School. He received his medical degree from Upstate Medical University, where he also served as Chief Resident, and is a diplomate of the American Board of Emergency Medicine.
