Specialized Care for Your Child’s Unique Needs

Children may need surgery for a variety of reasons: to repair a hernia or correct a birth defect and to help them grow up strong. When your child needs surgery, you want a team of experts you can trust.

St. Joseph’s Health is a leader in surgical care for children of all ages — from the tiniest newborns to teens and young adults.   Our pediatric surgeons are among the most experienced in New Jersey and are all board certified by the American Board of Surgery in Pediatric and General Surgery.  Each year, we perform thousands of pediatric surgical procedures, including lifesaving emergency surgeries and routine elective procedures. Our team provides exceptional, comprehensive care, from initial consultation and diagnosis through treatment and follow-up, and works closely with you to create a personalized treatment plan that best meets your child’s needs.

St. Joseph’s Health developed state-of-the-art facilities designed with children in mind, featuring the latest surgical technology.  Our surgeons are specially trained to use techniques and tools designed for little bodies that are still growing.  We emphasize the use of minimally-invasive techniques, including robotic surgery, whenever possible.  Minimally invasive surgery is a technique that does not require a large incision.  This means smaller incisions, less discomfort, shorter healing times, less-noticeable scarring, and a faster return to normal activities.  Many procedures can be safely performed on an out-patient basis, allowing your child to return home the same day after the immediate recovery period.  All of our team members have extensive experience in working with children, and take extra measures to ensure that each child feels safe and comfortable.  Specialized Child Life Care experts are there to make the children feel safe and advocate for their fears and insecurities.

A State-Designated Children’s Hospital

St. Joseph’s Children’s Hospital – part of St. Joseph’s Health – is a state-designated “children’s hospital” which means that the hospital has met specific standards of pediatric health, including offering specialized pediatric care like a pediatric emergency department, a pediatric intensive care unit and a regional perinatal center.  We have a full team of pediatric experts from several surgical and medical specialties, who are specially trained to care for children.   Our board-certified physicians, surgeons, nurses, nurse practitioners, physical therapists, and pediatric anesthesiologists collaborate to give children the most comprehensive care possible. They understand the unique physical and emotional needs of children and their families.  This means that we can take care of every child across a full range of conditions, from the common to the most complex and challenging.
