Program Overview

Exceptional Training, World Class Care

The Hematology/Oncology Program is designed to assure all fellows are competent in all clinical aspects of HEM/ONC both inpatient and outpatient. There are to acquire an understanding of the basic scientific concepts in which clinical practice is based. Fellows are expected to be able to critique and ascertain information in medical literature, whether new protocols have been properly studied and whether they are clinically relevant for leadership in a specific therapeutic protocol is applied.

Hematology / Oncology is a field that has changed dramatically in the past few years. It is inexorable becoming personalized medicine for any if not most malignancies. These rapid changes make this field both exciting and challenging for the practicing clinician.

The fellowship program at St. Joseph University Medical Center aims to train fellows in clinical skills while keeping abreast of advances in genetics, molecular biology and immunology. These goals are hopefully achieved while not forgetting about the humanistic aspects of medicine.

Fellows are trained in all solid tumors, benign and malignant hematology as well as coagulation disorders. There are several continuity clinics to insure both inpatient and outpatient experiences.

By the end of the fellowship program fellows should feel comfortable speaking to patients and family members about a patient’s diagnosis as well as treatment options so they can help guide the patients and families in the decision making process.
